Yearbook Battle - Messi, Ronaldo and Co. go back to school!

Goal's Yearbook Battle has kicked off and the world's best players are battling for recognition across 16 star-studded teams.

Our experts have compiled the best XIs based on the year players were born, from the golden oldies of 1981 to the new kids on the block of 1996, and Monday sees the last 16 games get under way in the week-long fantasy tournament.

Marathon

Pheidippides running

The name Marathon comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek messenger. The legend states that he was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon (in which he had just fought), in August or September, 490 BC. It is said that he ran the entire distance without stopping and burst into the assembly, exclaiming "we have wοn", before collapsing and dying
